U12 ICEHAWKS BRING SILVER MEDAL HOME
Submitted By Joe D'Angelo on Friday, November 9, 2012
The U12 Icehawks provincial team earned a silver this past weekend in their first tournament in Oshawa. In their tournament opener, the IceHawks handed West Ferris their first loss. Jordan-Lee Matte opened up the scoring with assists from Shelby Walker and Victoria Young. With help from Young, Walker followed suit with the second goal. Young finished up the scoring after being fed by Darienne See. Alyssa Desgagne earned the shut out in the 3 – 0 win.
The next game proved more challenging as the Soo met up with the home team, the Oshawa Storm. The Icehawks jumped to an early 2 – 0 with goals from Darienne See and Victoria Young. But the determined Oshawa team tied the game up in the second period. The IceHawks were unable to rally for a go ahead goal.
On day two of the tournament, the IceHawks squad met up with a fired up Whitby team, who had nothing but revenge in their eyes after being handed an 11 – 3 loss at last year’s provincial championships by the feisty Soo team. Shelby Walker found the back of the net, 6 minutes into the game, but the Hawks weren’t able to add any to the score and finished in a 1-1 tie.
The IceHawks faced a do or die situation in their final game of the round robin against an undefeated West Ottawa team. A win guaranteed them a berth in next day’s final. Darienne See opened the IceHawks scoring in an unassisted drive to the net. The Hawks found themselves tied after the first period. After finding themselves down 2 – 1 in the second, the Campbell sisters connected with the tying goal. After receiving a feed from Shelby, Zoey drove one past the West Ottawa goaltender. With momentum going their way, Jenna Vecchio was able to find Young who responded with a quick deke to seal the West Ottawa fate and put the IceHawks through to the finals! Without the efforts of the entire team, including Kaitlyn Stocks, Isabelle Baril, Megan Rogozynski, Kayla Simms, Mackenzie Wood-Salomon and Avy Bowman, this would not have been possible!
After giving it all in the West Ottawa victory, the IceHawks met a charged Oshawa team in the finals and were defeated 5 – 0 in a valiant effort!
Thanks to all…….and most importantly remember…… “I BELIEVE”!!!!!!!!!
