In what turned out to be a thriller of a final, the Sault IceHawks U12 Provincial Rep Ringette team dug their way to a Gold Medal at the Richmond Hill Lightning Ringette Tournament this past weekend. Kayla Simms hit paydirt with an overtime goal with 2:49 left in the period on a feed by Shelby Walker to defeat a determined Whitby Wild.
The IceHawks jumped to a 2- 0 lead with goals by Mackenzie Wood-Salomon and Simms. Helping them find the handle were Megan Rogozynski, Darienne See, and Victoria Young. The Wild couldn’t be tamed, and fought back to overtake the Sault squad 3 – 2. With only 43 seconds left in regulation time, Young, assisted by Zoey Campell, handed the Wild a devastating blow to send the game into overtime.
In semi-final action, the Sault IceHawks battled to a 6- 1 victory over the home team, Richmond Hill Lightning. Leading the charge was Shelby Walker with a pair of goals. Shelby Campbell, See, Young and Wood-Salomon also added to the scoring with assists by Shelby Campbell, Jenna Vecchio , Jordan Lee Matte and Simms . A great defensive effort by Avy Bowman, Kaitlyn Stocks, Isabelle Barill and Zoey Campbell, in addition to ‘stand on her head goaltending’ by Alyssa Desgagne, limited the Lightning to a single goal.
Next action for the IceHawks is at the Provincial Championships held in Oshawa. The Sault squad will be defending their Provincial Champions title in April.
