The U12 Sault Ste. Marie ICEHAWKS defended
their championship title this past weekend in Oshawa at the Ontario Ringette
Association’s Provincial Championships.
The 5 day event proved to be exhaustive, as the Sault team battled their
way to the finals.
The tenacious squad faced a determined
Chatham team for the gold medal but were unable to put any points on the board
in the 5 – 0 loss.
In round robin action, the IceHawks showed
that determination, relentless effort and playing with heart were the key
ingredients to placing first and earning
a berth in the finals.
The tournament opener against a feisty Forest team set the tone for the rest of the week. The IceHawks ground their way to a 2 – 1 victory with goals by Zoey Campbell and Victoria Young. Assisting in the efforts were Shelby Campbell, Mackenzie Wood -Salomon, and Young.
Kayla Simms, on a feed by Jenna Vecchio, scored the winner in game two against the hometown Oshawa Storm . Young opened the scoring with a pair of goal on assists by Wood-Salomon, Shelbey Walker , Zoey Campbell and Meghan Rogozynski. Vecchio followed up with an unassisted goal in the 4 – 3 win.
In what once again proved to be an all- out effort, the Soo squad defeated the Metcalfe Hornets 3 – 2. A solid defensive showing by Avy Bowman, Isabelle Baril, Kaitlyn Stocks and Zoey Campbell, along with outstanding goaltending by Alyssa Desgagne, limited the Metcalfe chances. Darienne See put the Hawks on the scoreboard first and Young added another pair on the road to victory.
A lead pass by Avy Bowman set up the tying goal by Shelby Walker early in the first period against the Chatham Thunder. But the IceHawks were outscored, however , not out muscled in the 5 – 3 loss.
In their last nail biter of the Round Robin against Elora-Fergus, See and Wood-Salomon scored for the IceHawks to solidify the first place finish.
Coaches Bruce Graham, Joe D’Angelo, Carl Desgagne and Sarah Jones were thrilled with the team’s performance over the past season. The IceHawks played to a Silver Medal in their opening tournament, followed by a respectful showing in Cambridge then earning a Gold Medal in Richmond Hill.
Congratulations U12 IceHawks.
