Sault Ice Hawks U19 Tournament Ringette Team Captures Gold in Timmins
Submitted By Steve Bell on Monday, April 7, 2014
Make it three for three for The U19 Sault Ice Hawks! For the third straight tournament, the U19 Ice Hawks have captured gold. The Ice Hawks were victorious this past weekend at the Northeast Regional Ringette Championships, held in Timmins Ontario. The Ice Hawks started strong on Friday, defeating West Ferris 7 to 3. In the evening game, they were dominant in defeating Walden 7 to 1. In the final game of the round robin on Saturday, the Ice Hawks were defeated 5 to 2 by Valley East. Despite the loss, the Ice Hawks qualified for the semi-finals.

In the Semi-finals, The Ice Hawks again defeated the Walden team by a score of 8 to 1. This set up a rematch with the West Ferris 63’s.

The final proved to be a tense, and very exciting affair. The Sault started strong, jumping out to a 2 to 0 lead. However, West Ferris started to put a lot of pressure on the Ice Hawks, eventually managing to tie the game at 2 to 2. At the end of regulation, the game was still tied. Good chances were seen at both ends, but the goaltenders held their teams in the game.

In overtime, the Ice Hawks had first possession. They managed to get in over the West Ferris blue line. Katie Higgs then found Krista Maeumbaed open in front of the net. She slid the ring over to Krista, who put it into the back of the West Ferris net just 20 seconds into overtime!

Team members include: Gavin Bell, Kaylin Paquette, Faye Crozier, Caitlyn Rogozinski, Kelsey O’Donnell, Katelyn Desgagne, Emily Giagvanoli, Katie Higgs, Krista Maeumbaed, Emilya Junor, Taylor Elliott, and Hali Nantais.

The coaching staff includes: Debbie Desgagne, Rhonda Bateman, and Steve Bell.
