The Sault
Ice Hawks U19 Ringette Team captured the Silver Medal over the weekend at the
Annual Pierrefonds Ringette Tournament in Montreal.
In the
opening game of the tournament Saturday morning, the Ice Hawks received
balanced scoring and Gavin Bell had the shutout in a convincing 3 to 0 victory
over the home team from Pierrefonds. In the evening matchup, the Ice Hawks fell
to a strong and determined squad from Levi, losing 4 to 0.
The Ice Hawks were left with a must win game on Sunday morning, against a strong squad from Boisbriand, Quebec. A solid team effort, aided by a pair of goals from both Krista Maeumbaed and Kaylin Paquette led the Ice Hawks to a hard fought 6 to 4 victory, and a birth in the Sunday afternoon Championship Game.
The final was a barnburner, with the Ice Hawks jumping out to an early 1 to 0 lead on a goal by Emilya Junor. The play went back and forth, with great determination and effort being displayed by both teams. In the final three minutes of the first period, Levi scored twice, including one just five seconds prior to the finish of the period.
The Ice Hawks came out flying in the second frame, putting pressure on Levi, but running into a determined Goaltender and strong defence. Emily Giagvagnoli was finally able to bulge the twine, tying the game at two apiece just four minutes into period two.
The game remained tied into the closing moments of the period. The Ice Hawks were able to kill off two minor penalties given in the final three minutes of the game.
Unfortunately, with just 47 seconds left in regulation, Levi scored what proved to be the winning goal with a hard shot from the slot. The Ice Hawks pulled their goaltender and had a couple of great chances in the dying seconds, but were unable to get the equalizer.
