
Sault Ice Hawks U19 Ringette Tournament Team Strikes Gold In Niagara Falls

The Sault
Ice Hawks U19 Ringette Team captured the Gold Medal over the weekend at the
Annual Niagara Falls Ringette Tournament in Niagara Falls.
In the
opening game of the tournament Friday evening, the Ice Hawks came out strong,
overcoming a talented side from London Ontario 3 to 1. Saturday afternoon, the
Ice Hawks put forth a valiant effort, but fell 5 to 2 to a strong team from
Forest Ontario.
The Ice Hawks were left with a must win game Sunday morning, taking on St. Clements. The Ice Hawks fell behind early, 1 to 0 in the first few minutes. The tide switched quickly however, and the Ice Hawks reeled off five straight goals before the end of the period. Katie Higgs and Katelyn Desgagne led the way with two goals each. The game ended with the Ice Hawks taking a 5 to 1 decision, earning them a birth in the afternoon Championship Game.
The final was a rematch against the powerhouse team from Forest. The Ice Hawks came out strong, forechecking tenaciously, and receiving strong goaltending from Gavin Bell. The Forest team ran into penalty trouble, and the Ice Hawks took full advantage. Alanna Hunnie scored a powerplay goal at the 1:46 mark of the first period. The Ice Hawks continued to work hard shift after shift, and it paid off handsomely. At the 7:35 mark of the first period, Alanna Hunnie scored her second goal of the game, on a nice pass from teammate Kaylin Paquette. Forest developed a sense of urgency, but were unable to get onto the scoresheet for the balance of the first period.
The second period was tight checking, and the Ice Hawks ran into some penalty trouble, but tight defensive work and solid goaltending kept Forest off the board. The final buzzer rang, and the Ice Hawks had prevailed 2 to 0.
The U19 Ice Hawks are: Gavin Bell, Faye Crozier, Katelyn Desgagne, Emily Giovagnoli, Katie Higgs, Alanna Hunnie, Emilya Junor, Krista Maeumbaed, Hali Nantais, Kelsey O’Donnell, Kaylin Paquette, Natalie Reed, Caitlyn Rogozynski, and Avery See.
