Have you found yourself wondering what to do during the Ringette off-season?

The long term athlete development model (LTAD) identifies the need to do a variety of physical activities and sports to achieve one’s potential. This is developed from an approach termed “periodization” that involves cycling the total time spent in exercise, the intensity, and the type of exercise, leads to better performances.

It is also good mentally for athletes (and parents!) to get away from the stress of sport specific competition. Taking a break from season-long team mates to do something different also helps avoid teams and players getting into ruts or getting complacent.

The message to athletes: enjoy and benefit from the Ringette off-season.

Some things to consider (talk to your coach for ideas too):

*   Take down-time after the season – stay active, stretch, do yoga and breathe easy;

*   Play a sport similar to Ringette – try soccer, basketball – develop agility, quickness, balance and coordination (activities like dance, gymnastics or martial arts can also help);

*   Take a summer ringette camp that offers social and physical activity that build foundations for Ringette (athletes need a variety of coaches to fully develop);

*    If possible, try a 3 on 3 or off-season summer Ringette tournament – players can develop by playing with good players in a relaxed yet competitive “shinney” environment;

*    If you are old enough, join a fitness club and learn about fitness techniques and how they apply or are adapted for Ringette;

*   Before the season starts try to get some ice time…if your team is not on the ice, power skating programs are an option.
*   Cardio training is also critical to help ensure you will perform your best heading into the season.
