Sault Ringette Club Hosts a Fun-Filled “Come Try Ringette” Event for Newcomers and Community Families

On Sunday, April 6th, 2025, the Sault Ringette Club proudly hosted an incredible “Come Try Ringette” event at home ice at the Northern Community Centre, welcoming newcomer families and local community members to experience the fast-paced, uniquely Canadian sport of ringette.

From curious first-timers to budding young athletes, the event saw enthusiastic participation from children as young as four years old. The event started with an exciting two-minute showcase scrimmage by our very own Sault Ice Hawks players, giving spectators a thrilling preview of what ringette looks like in action.

Following the showcase, participants laced up their skates and hit the ice, where they were grouped by skill level. For many, this was their first time on skates—a milestone moment met with smiles and encouragement. Those with skating experience dove into drills, trying their hand at passing, shooting, and stick-checking.

With over 20 Ice Hawks players and volunteers on the ice, participants were never far from friendly guidance and support. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared love for trying something new.  Seeing so much support from our players helping and encouraging new players on the ice was AMAZING.

A special highlight of the day was the participation of international exchange students from Thailand visiting Sault Ste. Marie as part of the CANAsian Academic Adventures program. These students spend six weeks immersed in Canadian culture—what better way to do that than learning about one of Canada’s most cherished winter sports!!

This event's success was made possible through our valued partnership with the YNCU Motivate 2 Skate program. This incredible community initiative provided skates and helmets for participants, helping to break down barriers to trying the sport. We want to thank all our volunteers, partners, and participants for making the event so memorable. Whether it was your first time on skates or seeing ringette, we hope you had a blast!  Thank you also to Ringette Canada for supporting our Come Try Ringette event!
